Fishing on the Crystal Coast

It's no secret that the Crystal Coast is one of the best fishing destinations on the East Coast. The Gulf Stream runs close to shore here, warm blue water pushing in schools of blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and wahoo. Inshore, the sounds and tidal creeks hold red drum, flounder, speckled trout, and sheepshead year-round.

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament

Every June, Morehead City hosts the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the oldest and most prestigious offshore fishing tournaments in the country. Dozens of sport fishing boats compete over six days for millions in prize money, and the weigh-ins at the Morehead City waterfront draw crowds every evening. Even if you're not fishing, it's worth showing up to watch a 500-pound marlin come off the dock.

Fishing Piers

The Crystal Coast has several public fishing piers where you can drop a line without a boat. The Atlantic Beach Pier and the Oceanana Pier at Atlantic Beach are both open to the public and well-stocked with bait and tackle. No license is required to fish from a licensed pier in North Carolina, making them a great option for families and first-timers.

Charter Boats

Morehead City and Beaufort are home to a large fleet of charter boats running half-day, full-day, and multi-day offshore trips. Whether you're after blue marlin in the Gulf Stream or bottom fishing for grouper and snapper over nearshore wrecks, there's a captain and a boat for it. Most marinas can connect you with a reputable charter, and many captains book up fast in summer, so plan ahead.

Inshore & Sound Fishing

Bogue Sound, Back Sound, and the tidal creeks behind the barrier islands offer some of the best inshore fishing on the coast. Red drum and speckled trout are the main targets, and a local guide can put you on fish in waters that most visitors never find. Kayak fishing has also taken off here, with easy launch points at several public access sites along the sound.
