Hammocks Beach State Park
Three barrier islands, four miles of undeveloped beach, and no roads to get there. That's Hammocks Beach State Park — one of the least-disturbed barrier island ecosystems on the East Coast, and one of the best day trips from the Crystal Coast.
Bear Island is the centerpiece: a four-mile stretch of white sand beach backed by tall dunes, maritime shrub thicket, and salt marsh. No cars, no development, no crowds. The ferry runs from the mainland dock in Swansboro from spring through fall, crossing the Intracoastal Waterway in about 20 minutes. Paddlers can reach the island year-round by canoe or kayak along marked paddle trails through the marsh.
What to do on Bear Island
- Swim and sunbathe on one of the most pristine beaches in North Carolina
- Shell along the shoreline — the undeveloped beach means less competition
- Fish from the beach or the inlet
- Hike the trails through the dunes and maritime forest
- Watch for loggerhead sea turtles, which nest on the island each summer
Hiking & Paddle Trails
The mainland side of the park has hiking trails through coastal forest and marsh. The paddle trail network winds through the tidal creeks and estuaries between the islands — a quiet, flat-water route that's ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
Getting There
The park entrance and ferry dock are located at 1572 Hammocks Beach Road, Swansboro, NC. The passenger ferry runs seasonally — check the NC State Parks website for the current schedule and rates. Kayak and canoe rentals are available near the ferry dock.
