North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores

Tucked into the maritime forests of Bogue Banks, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of the coast's best days out. The aquarium sits on 32 acres of coastal habitat and puts you face-to-face with the creatures that call these waters home — from loggerhead sea turtles and river otters to sharks, eels, and thousands of fish swimming through a 306,000-gallon ocean tank.

Exhibits follow the journey of water from the mountains to the sea, tracing North Carolina's rivers, estuaries, and offshore reefs. Kids can touch horseshoe crabs and sea urchins in the hands-on Discovery Gallery, and the daily dive shows in the main tank are worth timing your visit around.

The surrounding forest trails connect to the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, so you can pair the aquarium with a walk through one of the last undeveloped maritime forests on the Carolina coast. It's a full day without trying.

Good to know: Open daily. Parking is free. The aquarium is about 15 minutes from Atlantic Beach and a short drive from Emerald Isle.
