Tryon Palace, New Bern, NC

Built in 1770 as the official residence of Royal Governor William Tryon, Tryon Palace was once considered the finest public building in colonial America. Destroyed by fire in 1798, it was meticulously reconstructed in the 1950s on its original foundations and today stands as one of North Carolina's most significant historic sites.

The palace sits at the heart of a 16-acre complex in downtown New Bern, where the Neuse and Trent rivers meet. Costumed interpreters bring the colonial era to life through demonstrations of 18th-century trades, cooking, and daily life. The formal gardens are planted with period-accurate varieties and worth a slow walk on their own.

Beyond the palace itself, the complex includes the North Carolina History Center, which traces the state's story from the Tuscarora people through the Civil War and into the 20th century. Rotating exhibits, hands-on galleries, and a 250-seat theater round out the experience.

New Bern is about an hour's drive from the Crystal Coast, making Tryon Palace an easy day trip. Plan on two to three hours to do it justice.
